The eye does not see what the mind does not know: the bacterium in the worm.

چکیده
Symbiotic relationships underlie the evolutionary success of many different life forms. The filarial worms are long, slender nematode parasites that cause considerable pathology in large segments of the world's population. About 25 years ago, investigators first reported the presence of bacterial organisms living inside these parasitic worms. Recent molecular biological studies have indicated that these bacteria belong to the genus Wolbachia, members of which have been known to be associated with numerous species of insects. Elimination of the Wolbachia from the nematodes (by, for instance, treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics) results in profound disturbances in the physiology of the latter, including a complete block in reproduction. This observation, taken together with the fact that every individual worm examined to date contains Wolbachia, validates the classification of the latter as "endosymbionts." Many studies indicate that the Wolbachia may also play an important role in the pathology caused by the nematode worms, and that it might be possible to target therapy against the Wolbachia to treat the filarial disease. Intriguingly, the intense recent interest in Wolbachia is in complete contrast with the virtually complete indifference evoked by the original discovery of these organisms.

The development and evolution of any system–person, organization–nation depends on how the system succeeds to bridge the gap between what the system knows and what the system does (with the knowledge). We call this the gap between knowing and doing or the knowing-doing gap. If the system does not do what it knows, it will lose out in competition with other systems, its relative performance in...
متن کاملThe roots of Knowledge and Information science
Knowledge and Information science is rooted in philosophy and its branches are in sociology. This does not impair its interdisciplinary position. In Iran, the name of "LIS" has undergone a little change and called "knowledge & Information Science (KIS)". Through this change, the importance of philosophy in this discipline has reached its highest level. Knowledge science has a great relationship...
متن کاملBook Review: "Loving Literature. A Cultural History"
It is widely acknowledged that emotion is deeply embedded in literary criticism. Even when we aspire to scientific analysis and objectivity, we assume that we share a love of literature. Loving Literature is a deep and fascinating exploration of this important assumption. Literary critics and professors of literature are expected not only to know but also to love their work. In the case of prof...
متن کاملMicro worm, culture method and its application in ornamental larviculture
In the culture of freshwater and saltwater aquatic species, feeding is one of the most challenging stages. During this period of life, larvae are very sensitive and many of them need special food to meet their needs, if the food does not meet the needs of larvae in terms of nutrient composition and physical characteristics such as size and shape, the survival and growth of the larvae will be se...
متن کاملOverdiagnosis: An Important Issue That Demands Rigour and Precision; Comment on “Medicalisation and Overdiagnosis: What Society Does to Medicine”
Van Dijk and colleagues present three cases to illustrate and discuss the relationship between medicalisation and overdiagnosis. In this commentary, I consider each of the case studies in turn, and in doing so emphasise two main points. The first is that it is not possible to assess whether overdiagnosis is occurring based solely on incidence rates: it is necessary also to have data about the b...
